Rescriptor (delavirdine) Not approved for children. Correct dose of adolescents and adults is 400 mg, three times a day. Not approved for newborns and infants. Not available.
Sustiva (efavirenz) There is a fixed-dose schedule for children requiring Sustiva. A child weighing between 10 and 15 kg (22 and 33 pounds) should take 200 mg once a day. A child weighing between 15 and 20 kg (33 and 44 pounds) should take 250 mg once a day. A child weighing between 20 and 25 kg (44 and 55 pounds) should take 300 mg once a day. A child weighing between 25 and 32.5 kg (55 and 71.5 pounds) should take 350 mg once a day. A child weighing between 32.5 and 40 kg (71.5 and 88 pounds) should take 400 mg once a day. All children weighing more than 40 kg (88 pounds) should take the adult dose of 600 mg once a day. Not approved for newborns and infants. Sustiva is only available in pill form, either 50 mg and 200 mg capsules or 600 mg tablets.
Viramune (nevirapine) Viramune can be given to children, using their size to determine the dose. Children 15 days of age or older should receive 150 mg per square meter of body surface area, taken once a day for the first 14 days. If there is no rash or serious side effect, this dose should be taken twice a day. For children 8 years of age and younger, the dose may need to be increased to 200 mg per square meter of body surface area, once a day for 14 days and twice a day thereafter. The correct dose of Viramune in newborns and infants younger than 14 days of age will depend on child's body weight. The usual dose is 2 mg per kilogram of body weight given as a single dose between birth and 3 days. The treatment dose for children between 4 and 14 days of age has not been clearly defined. A liquid solution of Viramune is available for babies and children, which is easier to give to young children than the adult tablets.
