Lesson Which Are The Easiest Drug Combinations? (A Look At Fewer Pills and Once-A-Day Dosing)
en español

Introduction

Anti-HIV drug combinations are now more powerful and effective than ever before in terms of keeping HIV-positive people alive longer and healthier. It is also important to point out that anti-HIV drug combinations are much easier to take – with respect to the number of daily doses and the number of pills that must be swallowed every day – than when drug combinations first became standard treatment approximately ten years ago. Today, the majority of these combinations require once- or twice-daily dosing and are much more flexible in terms of dietary requirements.

Certainly, these new "simplified" drug regimens are very appealing. But they can also be very confusing to understand, especially when pharmaceutical companies advertise that their drugs – or a combination of their drugs – are easier to take than another company's products. The fact is, choosing a regimen involves a number of important factors, with "easiness to take" being only one factor to consider.

This lesson has been written for two groups of HIV-positive people:

  1. People who have not yet taken any anti-HIV drugs and are currently researching their treatment options; and
  2. People who are currently taking anti-HIV drugs and are hoping to simplify their regimens, either by adding new drugs, switching an older drug for a newer one, or switching their entire regimen in favor of a new drug combination.

We hope that readers will take the information they learn from this lesson back to their healthcare providers in order to figure out how to make the most of anti-HIV drug treatment while taking fewer pills or doses.
