International AIDS Society Honors Jack Whitescarver

The International AIDS Society (IAS) has presented its inaugural IAS Presidential Award to Jack Whitescarver, PhD, associate director for AIDS research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and director of the NIH Office of AIDS Research (OAR), according to an IAS statement. The award recognizes individuals with a long history of work as an HIV/AIDS pioneer or advocate. Whitescarver first reported the possibility of a new infectious disease now recognized as AIDS to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and helped develop the initial federal response for AIDS research.
