Gilead Developing New Four-in-One HIV Drug

A four-in-one antiretroviral pill is being developed by Gilead Sciences and, according to a report by Bloomberg News, is expected to enter a clinical trial by this summer.

The new pill will contain four Gilead drugs—tenofovir (Viread), emtricitabine (Emtriva), the experimental integrase inhibitor elvitegravir and a drug that boosts elvitegravir blood levels, currently called GS9350.

Gilead is negotiating with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on the size and scope of the trial. Not only will the study explore the effectiveness of this novel drug combination, but it will also help answer lingering questions about the safety of elvitegravir and GS9350. Elvitegravir is currently being evaluated in Phase III studies in people who are treatment experienced; GS9350 is in a much earlier stage of development.

If the study results are positive, the new pill could become an alternative to the only existing treatment that includes a full ARV regimen in one tablet, Atripla (tenofovir, emtricitabine and efavirenz).

I was diagnosed in 97, put on meds immediately. My viral load was 40,000+ and t cells 492 I believe. I have been NCD since 6 mos after being diagnosed, and my t cells range anywhere from 1100 to 1500 depending on various factors. I have never had a related illness, merely the common cold and/or flu. I'll take meds any day of the week over sitting around and doing nothing but b1tching. Obviously some of us would have already passed on without meds, so extending one's life is a bonus.

I advise and ask the editorial board stop publishing incitement for death! and for those who go about life lost . when I was diagnosed HIV+ on 07 I was a shadow-physically-medically and physiologically. 2 years after starting haart [arvs] VIRAL Load IS kept undetected, CD4 BOOSTS UP,IMMUNE SYSTEM, AND VITAL SYSTEMS OF BODY ARE REGAINED AND RESTRUCTURED. START YOUR MEDICATION AS EARLY AS DETECTION, IF AROUND CD4=450 OR PERCENTAGE LOWER THEN 25%.

Here's the link to the article that Fred keeps hyping http//content.nejm.org/cgi/content/full/354/13/1422 It states that a small number of people who have been recently vaccinated against flu may have a false positive EIA screening test, and that further testing is needed to confirm the result. In infants that receive the hepatitis B vaccine, a small number may have a false positive hepatitis b surface antigen test that needs further testing to confirm or rule out. No controversy there Fred.

what, nobody wants to comment on the New England Journal of Medicine report about flu shots causing the body to produce the 2 proteins looked for on the hiv test? but rather simply get angry at the messenger? i took hiv drugs for 11 years until 2 years ago when i found out the truth. it wasn't easy, but it is the truth. i never needed hiv drugs.

Kevin, Phoenix, 2009-01-20 13:54:53
HIV meds work because they're toxic....toxic to the HIV virus. People with HIV no longer die like they did in the 80's because of meds. It's a fact that meds save lives. I still can't fathom why people like Fred live in their willful ignorance 'the earth is flat' conspiracy mentality when the truth is right there for everyone to see. So Fred, go ahead and refuse to take meds. I'll send some cheap plastic flowers to your funeral (maybe)and live another 20 years or more with my meds.

Mike A, Nicholasville KY, 2009-01-15 19:49:45
Fred toxic or not the fact is I would already most likely be dead if the drugs weren't around. Everybody must die someday, I would rather take the meds. and die later. Till there is a cure that is my best option.

Victor Russell, San Jose, CA, 2009-01-15 17:25:50
Fred, Are you sure they are toxic for everyone or only people of color? Isn't HIV something cooked up to rid the world of those folks? Wake up and smell the coffee, I was infected before there were ANY meds and am still alive today due to all those toxins, like AZT at 1000mg daily. I've had great doctors from the start and I've followed their directions. I had to go to France to get the AZT due to fools trying to say GRIDS or AIDS wasn't a problem. Stop Spreading Foolish Death! Wills, that's right, the toxic hiv drugs work ... but only for short term. that's why all chemotherapies are limited treatments for cancer and it also explains why the only favorable research for hiv drugs are short term studies. long term results for hiv drugs are the same as for cancer drugs, and sadly it is death. why do flu shots cause false positives on the hiv test as reported in 2006 by the New England Journal of Medicine? 2 proteins determine positive status - just 2 proteins.

Barry, , 2009-01-15 11:31:29
This could be a really big development on the treatment front. A single pill, no more Norvir and it's side effects, no more Sustiva and it's side effects. Sounds like a very well tolerated combination similar to the Isentress / Truvada combo.

Wills, , 2009-01-15 10:49:29
Fred, All the meds are toxins. That's why they work. If naturally occuring substances controlled HIV, our bodies could take care of it on their own.

Joe, , 2009-01-15 08:34:18
Fred, It would seem that you're in the business of spreading unsubstantiated bs. Please spare us your moronic rantings and imbecilic nonsense.

fred, santa fe, 2009-01-14 15:11:52
Gilead Sciences has some very interesting characters running their company. lots of ties to some bizarre and shady people including george shultz and donald rumsfeld. I wouldn't touch the chemical compounds they produce with a ten foot pole. the ingredients in their hiv drugs are all known toxins and a simple wikipedia search will tell you that. question them or die. sorry, but that is the truth.
