Twice-Daily Retrovir Now OK for Kids

Retrovir (zidovudine) may now be used twice daily in HIV-positive children ages six weeks to 18 years and can be dosed by weight, according to an announcement by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Until now, the FDA recommended Retrovir three times a day in infants, children and adolescents, with the proper dose calculated by the total body surface area of the child.

The new dosing recommendations may be applied to either the syrup or tablet formulations of Retrovir.
