Bipartisan Federal Bill Would Lift Ban on HIV Organ Transplants

A Senate bill would allow federal research on organ transplants between people with HIV, The Oklahoman reports. Senators Tom Coburn (R–Okla.), Barbara Boxer (D–Calif.), Rand Paul (R–Ky.) and Tammy Baldwin (D–Wis.) introduced the bill. Research on the feasibility of such transplants has been banned by federal law since 1988. The organ donation pool could increase by 500 to 600 donors a year if transplants between HIV-positive people were allowed, according to a study by the American Journal of Transplantation.
